Project Oasis is a global research project on independent digital media and news content creators led by SembraMedia with support of Google News Initiative and a growing list of partners.
The media outlets and news content creators mapped and analyzed in the United States and Canada are part of the research we have carried out in more than 70 countries to offer valuable insights into business models, trends, and best practices that inspire collaboration and strengthen media sustainability.
The region’s media and creator mapping was conducted through desk research by a team of local researchers, building upon an initial mapping carried out by LION Publishers. The identification and evaluation of creators was conducted with support from Storyful and Overtone.ai.
By making this information accessible, Project Oasis aims to foster a stronger, more resilient media ecosystem that protects press freedom and serves the public interest.
SembraMedia hired a team of researchers to update and review the directory, which now features more than 1,800 media outlets and news content creators. This work builds upon an initial mapping that was done by LION Publishers with support from UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Toronto Metropolitan University in 2020, with updates in 2022 and 2023 before SembraMedia took over leadership of the project.
The update process involved reviewing the digital media profiles, enhancing the data, removing projects that are no longer active, and adding new profiles for content creators and digital news sites that have emerged since the original mapping was done.
The selection of U.S. and Canada profiles for the Global Project Oasis Media Directory follows the criteria for inclusion, developed by an international team with the goal of identifying independent, digital native media organizations that operate with editorial independence and transparency, and produce original content that serves the public interest.
