Project Oasis
Hispanoamerica

Project Oasis is a global research project on independent digital media led by SembraMedia with support of Google News Initiative and a growing list of partners.

The media profiles from Hispanoamerica in our Global Project Oasis Media Directory are from an ongoing research project in more than 20 countries conducted by SembraMedia.

SembraMedia created the first directory of digital native media outlets in the region to study and showcase the work of independent journalists publishing in Spanish across Latin America, Spain, and the Spanish-speaking markets in the U.S. and Canada. Its goal is to highlight the diversity and contributions of these media outlets and to share insights about the sector’s trends, challenges, and opportunities.

By making this information accessible, Project Oasis aims to foster a stronger, more resilient media ecosystems that protects press freedom and serves the public interest.

Methodology and Report

The SembraMedia’s Media Directory was created in 2015 and has been developed by a team of specialists who continue to map, update, and curate media profiles.

The profiles featured in the Directory are developed and periodically updated using information collected from:

  • Data provided directly by the media outlets themselves through interviews, surveys, or voluntary contributions; and/or
  • Publicly accessible sources

This information is used to assess compliance with the criteria for inclusion defined by SembraMedia, and is presented for informational purposes only. The project prioritizes digital native outlets that produce original content that serves the public interest, operate with editorial independence, and demonstrate transparency about their ownership and leadership. Inclusion is free and does not imply participation in other programs or funding from SembraMedia or its partners.

Inclusion in the Directory is dynamic and subject to periodic review. Profiles may be updated, remain active, or be removed depending on changes in the outlet’s activity, the broader context, or the evolution of SembraMedia’s methodological criteria.

As an organization that studies a diverse and constantly evolving ecosystem, it is understandable that certain contexts may present unique characteristics that do not fit neatly into the general criteria. For this reason, SembraMedia reserves the right to make exceptions when justified on editorial and methodological grounds. Examples of exceptions include:

  • Outlets that publish in languages relevant to Spanish-speaking communities, such as Catalan, Portuguese, English, Quechua, Guaraní, Aymara, Nahuatl, among others.
  • Media affiliated with public or religious universities may be included if they meet all other criteria, operate with editorial independence from their parent institutions, and publish content that serves audiences beyond the university or institution itself.
