Project Oasis is a global research project on independent digital media led by SembraMedia with support of Google News Initiative and a growing list of partners.
The media outlets mapped and analyzed in Europe are part of the research we have carried out in more than 65 countries to offer valuable insights into business models, trends, and best practices that inspire collaboration and strengthen media sustainability. We are now expanding our research into new regions, including countries in Africa and Asia.
By making this information accessible, Project Oasis aims to foster a stronger, more resilient media ecosystems that protects press freedom and serves the public interest.
Most of the media profiles from Europe in our Global Project Oasis Media Directory are from research conducted in 2022 by SembraMedia, with support from the Google News Initiative.
The first version of the European Project Oasis was launched on 18 April 2023 based on research conducted from June to December 2022 by a team of more than 30 local researchers, working closely with our partners. They identified more than 1,000 digital native outlets for potential inclusion. Of these, more than 650 were selected based on our criteria for inclusion. The research team then conducted interviews with media leaders and reviewed publicly available information to create the 540 media profiles that were featured in the first version of the directory.
The trends, insights and other information presented in our 2023 report and country summaries are based on our analysis of this selection of media outlets, and the information they provided during the research phase.
Since then, the Project Oasis Team, led by SembraMedia, has been reviewing, adding and updating media profiles. You can find all European media profiles in the Global Project Oasis Media Directory.
